Volkswagen focuses on future technologies

2 November 2016

Following the shock axing of its WRC programme, like Audi Sport, Volkswagen Motorsport has announced that it is focussing on “important future technologies.”

In a similar fashion to Audi exiting Le Mans in favour of Formula E, Volkswagen Motorsport is exiting the World Rally Championship at the end of the year.

“With the upcoming expansion in electrification of our vehicle range we must focus all our efforts on important future technologies,” explained Frank Welsch, member of the board of management responsible for Technical Development. “We are realigning Volkswagen Motorsport and moving the vehicle technology of the future more starkly into focus.”

The German automotive manufacturer wrapped up its fourth WRC Manufacturers title in a row at the 2016 Wales Rally GB. The title confirmed VW as the most dominant force in recent rallying history, winning 42 rallies out of 51 entries.

The announcement comes just days after Red Bull Global Rallycross revealed that it is creating a separate electric rallycross class for 2018.

Sven Smeets, motorsport director for Volkswagen added: “From now on, the focus is on upcoming technologies in motorsport and on our customer sports range, where we will position ourselves more broadly and attractively.”
