Red Bull given May deadline by Renault

28 February 2018

Red Bull has been handed a deadline of May by Renault to decide whether they want to continue using the French firm’s engines in 2019.

The future of the long running partnership has been in doubt for some time after both engine reliability problems, and Toro Rosso’s switch to the Honda powertrain for this season. However, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner emphasised that no decision had been made and insisted that the tie-up could ‘absolutely’ continue into 2019.

“All things are open for 2019 onwards,” he explained. “We will obviously pay close attention to how things develop at Toro Rosso but there are no preconceptions as we head into the season.”

Renault’s Cyril Abiteboul meanwhile acknowledged that Red Bull had options, but stressed that the team would need to make up its mind about its engine supply for the FIA stipulated deadline in May.

“We cannot wait forever,” he warned.

“I know Christian has said he has options and he is absolutely right…but we have obligations to help Formula 1, not Red Bull, and it is obvious that we must plan our work. The deadline is spelled out in the sporting regulations, because as far as I know, there should be clarity as to which engine supplier each team will have for the following year by the end of May.

“By this time, we want to know whether the cooperation will continue,” Abiteboul cautioned.
