Moto GP 2017 aero regulations clarified

13 September 2016

Following the announcement that aerodynamic devices will be banned in 2017 for Moto GP the FIM has detailed the regulation surrounding the ban for next year.

The decision to ban aerodynamic devices came during the Dutch GP at Assen this year with the MSMA (Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers’ Association) failing to come up with a conclusive solution to address riders safety concerns.

The FIM has updated the technical regulations for 2017 to include the wording below.

“Devices or shapes protruding from the fairing or bodywork and not integrated in the body streamlining (e.g. wings, fins, bulges, etc.) that may provide an aerodynamic effect (e.g. providing downforce, disrupting aerodynamic wake, etc.) are not allowed.”

The wording essentially removes the possibility to mould or shape in winglets or vortex generators that protrude from the bodywork. Furthermore should doubts be raised over the purpose of body work designs then the FIM has added the following..

“The Technical Director will be the sole judge of whether a device or fairing design falls into the above definition.”
