LinkedInBMW will return to Le Mans and WEC in 2018
BMW Motorsport has announced that it will return to the World Endurance Championship and 24 hours of Le Mans in 2018, following a seven-year hiatus.
BMW Motorsport’s current GT racer is an M6 GT3 and GTLM, which replaced the Z4 GT3 car at the start of 2016.
“Starting with the 2018 season, we want to further expand our activities in GT racing and compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship,” announced BMW Motorsport director, Jens Marquardt. “This obviously also includes our return to Le Mans, which we are particularly looking forward to. The way the WEC has developed so well makes us confident that there is a big future for GT racing.”
The German marque races the GTLM and GT3 variant of the M6 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Blancpain GT series respectively, as well as the prestigious Nurburgring and Spa 24 hour race with its GT3 variant.
Outside of GT racing, BMW is heavily invested in DTM with the M4 DTM car and also the M235i touring car, which can be seen in the VLN Endurance Championship.
It has also been revealed that BMW has partnered the AS Amlin Andretti Formula E team for seasons three and four with a view to enter as a works team by season five.
