Electric Volkswagen to take on Pikes Peak
Volkswagen is set to return to Pikes Peaks in 2018, with teaser images showing an aggressive looking all-electric prototype competition car.
The German marque first released two non-descript posts on Twitter previewing a very focused, futuristic racecar, it then released a short video (see below) of the last time it took on the formidable event with its twin-motor Golf in 1987 before the text ‘one score still to settle’ appears on screen.
After the ‘dieselgate’ scandal, in order to promote a greener image, Volkswagen removed itself from most top-level motorsport competition, including ending its WRC campaign. The Pikes Peak hillclimb is a good place for Volkswagen to promote its more environmentally-friendly, electrified image, given that the race is over a relatively short distance, so battery life is not an issue, and, unlike internal combustion entrants, electric cars don’t suffer any a drop in performance as the air gets thinner in higher altitudes.
