General Background

In 2015 Formula Student judge and Editor of RACE TECH magazine, William Kimberley, met a team from Jordan who stood out from the crowd for making a real effort in their class with hardly any funds or materials but still managed to design and produce a race car and compete in the event against all the odds. The award for the Spirit of Formula Student was thus born, encapsulating the story of blood, sweat and tears behind each team’s journey.

The inaugural award was presented the following year to the Edinburgh University Formula Student team, honouring its undivided efforts in just being present at the event with a car. Despite its lack of resources and support, its team members went out of their way to provide help to other teams when asked.

In 2017, the Spirit of Formula Student award went to the Alfaisal University from Saudi Arabia for a variety of reasons, one being it was a rookie team but embraced the spirit wholeheartedly. It also was led by a female engineer, which was noteworthy for a number of reasons and as a team they didn’t stop wanting to learn and ask questions. They knew that they were on a very steep learning curve, but continued to be inspired rather than daunted

In 2018, the award was presented to the NUST (National University of Science and Technology) Team AUJ from Pakistan, which was cheered with a standing ovation in the award ceremony for being the first ever all-girl team in the Formula Student UK’s history.
