Its clients range from F1 to NASCAR, including IndyCar, Trans AM, LMP GT, WRC, Off Road, Flat Track Sprint Cars and even Karting. For all these individual race series, SKF Racing delivers highly engineered support with design, calculation and simulation as well as custom tailored bearing solutions – or the right combination of off-the-shelf bearing solutions.

As part of its product portfolio, SKF Racing has developed a wheel-end solution that powers high-end performance in terms of stiffness, low friction and reliability of the complete car-corner. The new bearing designs and arrangements increase the upright stiffness while keeping the overall weight very low. Additional benefits include enhancement to wheel end service life, vehicle dynamic performance and – of critical importance to the driver – the handling of the race vehicle.

The wheel bearings are being continuously improved in order to maximize the ratio between stiffness vs. weight. One solution offered resulted in ball set stiffness increase of almost 500% with a weight savings of 60% with respect to the standard OEM bearing solution.

A low friction sealing system developed specifically for motorsport bearings reduces powertrain losses as well as providing features for reliable inspection and re-lubrication – even at the racetrack.

Such innovations from SKF represent significant improvements in the wheel corner area, which could enhance the performance and the driving experience of racing cars.
