Lewis Hamilton catches virus
Following tests after he tested positive for coronavirus, Lewis Hamilton will miss this week’s Sakhir GP. F1 has released a statement confirming the news, stating that he tested positive during the mandatory pre-race PCR test, and adding that he is now self-isolating.
He was tested three times last week including Sunday afternoon as part of the regular testing programme, returning a negative result each time according to Mercedes. However, on Monday morning, he woke up with mild symptoms and was informed at the same time that a contact prior to arrival in Bahrain had subsequently tested positive.
Hamilton took another test and this returned a positive result. A subsequent retest confirmed the result. He is now isolating in accordance with Covid-19 protocols and public health guidelines in Bahrain.
The F1 statement concluded, “The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula 1 will ensure no wider impact on this weekend’s event.”
His replacement for the Sakhir GP has yet to be named.
