Ferrari F1 confirms Lewis Hamilton move

2 February 2024

Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team have confirmed Lewis Hamilton will leave the Mercedes team and move to Ferrari F1 from 2025, activating his release option from his two-year contract.

In a shock move, Hamilton will leave his Mercedes team after eight years to join Charles Leclerc at Ferrari, replacing Carlos Sainz, who will leave at the end of this year.

The seven-time world champion signed a £100m two-year contract last year with Mercedes for him to stay with the team until the end of 2025, but under the terms he is eligible to leave at the end of the year.

Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate George Russell, whom joined Mercedes alongside Hamilton in 2022 will continue at the team.

Prior to joining Mercedes, Hamilton raced for McLaren.

Yesterday, Ferrari confirmed that their upcoming F1 car will be called the SF-24, continuing a recent tradition with the SF standing for Scuderia Ferrari, followed by the number of the current year.

The new F1 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix on 28 February.
