Porsche pulls hypercar from WEC to focus on Formula E
Porsche Motorsport is to withdraw from the FIA World Endurance Championship after the 2025 season and will instead focus on Formula E and its development of EV technology.
Due to heavy tariffs imposed on foreign car makers by the United States government, Porsche has undergone a comprehensive realignment, which will see it focus on two factory projects in motorsport.
Dr Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Development at Porsche AG said: “We very much regret that, due to the current circumstances, we will not be continuing our involvement in the WEC after this season.”
Porsche Motorsport will now concentrate on competing with the Porsche 99X Electric in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and with the Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The move means Porsche will no longer continue in WEC’s Hypercar category although is understood to continue with the Manthey’s Porsche LMGT3 program in the FIA WEC. Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG)’s, which owns Porsche, previously pulled its other brands Audi and Lamborghini from WEC.
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport said: “We use motorsport as a development platform for future technology and to illustrate the potential of our sports cars.”
He continued: “With the Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA series and the Porsche 99X Electric in the Formula E World Championship, we want to continue to fight for overall victories in the future. That is our tradition and our focus.”
