Mercedes-AMG GT3 to enter IMSA GT Series

10 November 2016

Mercedes-AMG will contest the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with numerous top teams, using its AMG GT3 car.

The marque is entering the 2017 IMSA GT Daytona (GTD) class as Mercedes-AMG looks to expand its customer racing programme in the US market with the AMG GT3 car, which is based on the AMG GT S road car with a naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8 engine.

“Our aspiration for expanding the AMG Customer Sports Program in the US is to provide the same level of comprehensive support that we have provided to teams in Europe for several years,” said director of AMG customer sports programme, Jochen Bitzer.

Riley Motorsports has been named as one of the teams set to use AMG machinery, it will enter two cars; one under the name of AMG-Team Riley Motorsports and the other as WeatherTech Racing.

SunEnergy1 Racing will also utilise the Silver Arrows GT racer.

“The high demand for the Mercedes-AMG GT3,” Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management, Mercedes-AMG, “particularly after the legendary 1-2-3-4 finish at this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, has inspired us to establish a Customer Sports Program in the US.”
