Audi committed to DTM; “No final decision on WRX”

With Audi Motorsport setting its sights firmly on Formula E at the expense of its LMP1 programme, the German marque has announced it will continue its DTM involvement.

Despite its FIA World Endurance and 24 hours of Le Mans programme ceasing at the end of the season, all eyes are now turning to the rest of Audi Motorsport’s programmes as the German giant turns its attention to electric racing.

According to the German giant, its DTM effort is safe for 2017, following a successful season picking up both the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ titles. Reports suggest a reduction to 18 car grids in DTM for 2017, a move targeted at reducing operating budgets.

“No final decision has yet been made concerning a future involvement in the FIA World Rallycross Championship [World RX],” said an Audi Motorsport spokesperson. The EKS WRX team as it stands is leading the WRX Teams’ Championship using the Audi Quattro S1 WRX against factory efforts from the likes of Peugeot, Ford and Volkswagen.

“Up to now, Audi’s involvement has been limited to supporting the private EKS team,” the spokesperson added. “The brand is currently evaluating a possible extension of the commitment, the exciting topic of electrification being on the agenda in rallycross racing as well.”
